Flight characteristics forecast entry by eagles into rotor‐swept zones of wind turbines

چکیده
Operators of wind power facilities can mitigate wildlife mortality by slowing or stopping turbines (hereafter ‘curtail’) when birds are at an increased risk collision. Some facility operators curtail individual have flight characteristics (e.g. altitude, distance relative bearing a bird's path) that exceed some threshold value, but thresholds currently in use not been empirically evaluated. Overly restrictive cause turbine curtailment for never enter rotor-swept zones, thereby resulting excess loss. We evaluated the probability birds, specifically eagles, entered zone ‘entry probability’) response to their characteristics. used automated monitoring system classify individuals as eagles non-eagles and record paths purported Wyoming, USA. logistic regression with occupancy dynamics distance-dependent colonization process model entry probability. As result, this allowed decrease horizontal nearest turbine. The varied approached zero was more than 202 m. Entry peaked flew 89 m above ground, corresponding hub heights (80 m), decreased near-zero altitudes 189 more. probabilities were greatest near slowly toward Compass path associated Our accurately forecasted Wyoming (area under curve (AUC) = 0.96) transferable another California, USA (AUC 0.97); therefore, our results may be applicable across variety settings. Curtailment criteria based on forecast into zones. altitude making decisions is justified. However, analysis suggests alteration time collision threshold, initiated greater distances speed bird decreases. novel modelling method inform any situation where made real-time.

The development of windmills has a long tradition. Windmills were already in use in Japan and China thousands of years ago. The great irrigation systems of Babylon are thought to have been powered by windmotors. Examples of windmills erected almost 2000 years ago still exist in Egypt. 'Wind power generation was first introduced to the Western world around the 8th century A.D. By the 16th centur...
متن کاملIncreased Flight Altitudes among Migrating Golden Eagles Suggest Turbine Avoidance at a Rocky Mountain Wind Installation
Potential wind-energy development in the eastern Rocky Mountain foothills of British Columbia, Canada, raises concerns due to its overlap with a golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) migration corridor. The Dokie 1 Wind Energy Project is the first development in this area and stands as a model for other projects in the area because of regional consistency in topographic orientation and weather patte...
متن کاملDirect - Drive Wind Turbines
The objective of this paper is to identify suitable generator concepts for direct-drive wind turbines by reviewing directdrive and geared generator systems. Usually, in literature, comparison of different generator systems is discussed with the criteria based on the energy yield, cost, and weight. Because direct-drive permanent-magnet machines are more superior in terms of the energy yield, rel...
متن کاملVariability of breaking wave characteristics and impact loads on offshore wind turbines supported by monopiles
Most existing and planned offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are located in shallow water where the possibility of breaking waves impacting the structure may influence design. Breaking waves and their associated impact loads are challenging to model because the breaking process is a strongly non-linear phenomenon with significant statistical scattering. Given the challenges and uncertainty in modeli...
